DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY Meaning of a Descriptive Essay A descriptive essay can b defined as the type of essay in which the writer is expected to give a clear picture of someone, something or a place. One reason for writing a descriptive essay is so that your reader can easily identify what you have described once he/she sees it. It requires you to be able to vividly describe an event so that those who did not see or experience it will feel really involved in the description. When describing a person, animal or place, use present tense and/or past tense only. Also, in a descriptive essay, you use a passel of adjectives. The best way to create a good and clear experience in this type of essay for your reader is to focus on the five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. Notwithstanding, in writing a descriptive essay, care must be taken to avoid spending too much time on answering questions, for it is what one knows that one is asked to describe. Features of a Descriptive Essay A good descriptive essay has the following outline: 1. topic/title 2. introduction 3. body of the essay 4. conclusion How to Write a Descriptive Essay In writing a good descriptive essay, the following benchmarks should be followed for a good write-up: 1. Identify who or what you are describing. 2. Identify the address or location of the person or object under description. 3. Explain why you are interested in describing the person or thing. 4. Identify the good qualities of the person or object of description. 5. Identify the bad qualifies or disadvantages of the person or object under description. The above criteria are necessary in writing a balanced essay, but note that the bad qualifies should be less than the good qualities. Note also that if your descriptive essay is meant for publication, you would have to write your name immediately after the conclusion, starting with your surname followed by the name of the place from which you are writing the essay.
